Somanna’s Journey: A Life Without Shelter
Meet Somanna, a resilient 56-year-old man living a life without a home, often found near bus stops and railway stations in Kurnool district. His story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, despite facing circumstances that most of us can’t imagine.
A Lifetime of Homelessness
Somanna’s journey into homelessness began in his childhood, a path filled with uncertainty. He doesn’t even know who his parents are. During the COVID lockdown, he migrated from Tirupati to Kurnool in search of pilgrims, as his means of begging for survival vanished in Tirupati. Unfortunately, due to his age and health condition, he’s unable to work to sustain himself.
Daily Struggles
During the day, Somanna can be found near traffic signals, seeking help from kind passersby. At night, his resting places vary from bus stops to railway stations and footpaths.
Sometimes, he goes hungry, unable to find enough sustenance to survive. During festivals, he visits temples and churches to seek alms. In his early years, Somanna worked as a garbage collector, gathering plastic bags from the streets and selling them for a meager income, mostly used for food and basic necessities. In his teenage years, he fell into the clutches of addiction to smoking and alcohol.
Health Battles
Somanna’s health is a constant struggle. His left leg is paralyzed due to paralysis, rendering him unable to perform even basic daily tasks. Nights are particularly harsh, as he sleeps on road-side footpaths, exposed to the elements. The security guards at railway stations and bus stops often prevent him from sleeping there. Additionally, Somanna has faced terrifying encounters with stray dogs during these nights.
Somanna’s story is one of countless others in similar situations. Help Foundation extends a compassionate hand to people like Somanna. We provide him with food three times a week and distribute blankets to help him survive the biting cold of winter nights. Our mission is to be a ray of hope in the lives of homeless individuals, offering them comfort, sustenance, and support.
